Tasmania needs a further 212 runs to win its Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales in Hobart.

The Tigers were 1 for 7 at stumps on the second day after earlier dismissing the Blues for 173 in their second innings.

Opener Philip Hughes top-scored with 108 after making 93 in the first dig.

The 20-year-old is being touted as a future Test player but is not getting ahead of himself.

"I just want to take it day by day and just keep it very simple and really just keep enjoying my cricket and really just keep improving," he said.

Hughes said early wickets will be important for the Blues on day three.

"Hopefully we can go bang in the morning and get a little bit of momentum," he said.

"There'll still be a little bit in the wicket so go bang, bang and 200 could be a fair chase."

Steven Smith was the only other batsman to reach double figures for the visitors, managing 42.

Ben Hilfenhaus and Dan Marsh took three wickets each for the Tigers.
