Council backs alcohol-free zone plan

Posted December 4, 2008 07:40:00

The Broken Hill City Council has agreed to support a proposal for an alcohol-free zone in the Creedon, Wills and Rakow streets area to address residents' concerns over alcohol consumption and domestic violence.

People living in Creedon Street, Aboriginal groups and the police support the alcohol-free zone.

The council's general manager, Frank Zaknich, says there are not any licensed premises in the area to be consulted and it is likely the zone could be established in February next year.

"There's less people to consult with in this area specifically, so council will consider the proposal and any submissions at its meeting at the end of January, so it's a reasonable time frame but one that's necessary because of the legislation we need to have," he said.
