Outback memorial to honour WWI hero

Posted December 4, 2008 09:03:00

A World War I hero from central western Queensland will be honoured with a new memorial.

Lieutenant Edgar Towner was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1918 for his bravery during a battle in France.

Terry Brennan from the Blackall RSL says the local community is trying to raise more than $80,000 to build a bronze statute in his honour.

"Western Queensland in general and all the little towns around here are enormously proud of their military history and heritage and I think when you have someone like Edgar Towner, who wins a Victoria Cross from your community - there aren't a lot of Victoria Crosses awarded - so I think it's important that the community remembers," he said.

"But also it's a place now where people can come and reflect and say 'this is the service that our community gave' and I think that's why the community's got involved."
