More taxis needed: Hotels Association

Posted December 4, 2008 09:46:00

The Australian Hotels Association in the Northern Territory says there aren't enough taxis and minibuses in Darwin.

The executive director Amy Williamson says there aren't enough taxis to cope with late night demand, and being able to get people home quickly and safely after a night out is crucial.

"I certainly don't think there's enough taxis and minibuses able to service the late night hours in the Darwin CBD and also in the suburbs for those wanting to head out at night. I think the taxi and minibus industry suffer the same shortages as the rest of business at the moment," she said.

The NT Transport Minister Delia Lawrie says the Government is doing a review of the taxi industry and the capping system.

She says there's currently a system of one taxi per 900 people.

"We've put an extra nine taxi licences out last week so we've got another nine taxis coming onto our road network and we're also working with the minibus sector because we believe that there's a real financial opportunity for minibuses to come into that late night transport", she said.
