Poor finances blamed for post-natal unit shutdown

Posted December 4, 2008 10:07:00

The New South Wales Opposition says cost cutting is behind a decision to close Camden Hospital's post-natal care unit for three months.

The unit normally shuts down over Christmas, but this year closed early in November and will not reopen until late in January.

The Sydney South West Area Health Service says the extended break is because of staff shortages.

But the Opposition's health spokeswoman, Jillian Skinner, says the real reason is the area health service's poor finances.

"Now they're going to shut down the post-natal care for three months and it means that those mums will either go straight home and struggle or they'll have to stay in Campbelltown Hospital, which is already crowded," she said.
