Green light likely for Batemans Bay brothel

Posted December 4, 2008 10:43:00

The Eurobodalla Shire says a brothel proposed for the Batemans Bay industrial estate is likely to get council approval.

Councillors are being criticised by community groups for handing the brothel development application to staff for a decision rather than holding a debate in open council.

Mayor Fergus Thomson says although council is likely to approve the development, it will be up to the police to issue the licence to the brothel operators.

He says the council has to abide by New South Wales Government planning laws.

"It is one of those really awkward situations and I appreciate where all of the councils would sit on this issue, many councillors, including myself, would have a moral objection, but at the end of the day councillors have to make a determination on a planning issue and bear in mind that it is approved in certain areas by the State Government," he said.
