Govt criticised over sex offenders plan

The child protection group Bravehearts has attacked a Queensland Government plan to move sex offenders to regional Queensland.

Corrective Services Minister Judy Spence says some sex offenders who have completed their sentence, but are still subject to conditions under the Dangerous Prisoner Sex Offenders Act, will be accommodated in secure houses in the Rockhampton and Townsville prison reserves.

A similar program already operates at Wacol in the state's south-east.

But Bravehearts director Hetty Johnston says repeat child sex offenders should not be released from jail at all.

"We believe any person who is convicted of multiple offences against children on separate occasions, so that is recidivists, those that are convicted more than once on child sexual abuse assault cases should never be released," she said.

"We just shouldn't have to be worried as a community where they are placing them."
