New Zealand's Tim Wilkinson was the clubhouse leader during the opening round of the Australian PGA Championship at Coolum in Queensland.

He shot a 6-under par round of 66 featuring seven birdies and a bogey to lead Australia's Geoff Ogilvy (67) by a stroke.

Ogilvy's compatriot Peter Nolan carded a 68 to be a further shot adrift.

Brett Rumford and John Senden had 69s while defending champion Peter Lonard and Michael Sim managed 70s.

American John Daly finished with a 1-under 71, overcoming a poor start in which he double-bogeyed the par-three 11th hole after finding the water.
