More firefighters needed in Top End: union

The Miscellaneous Workers Union says the number of firefighters in the Northern Territory has remained about the same since Cyclone Tracy in 1974.

The union is drafting a collective agreement to give to the NT Government calling for a 4% pay rise every year for the next three years.

The Union's Matthew Gardiner says he'd also like to see more firefighters recruited because the current number isn't matching population growth.

"One of the things that has really changed is the way that the city is, obviously 20 years ago the city used to be basically two to three storey buildings, now we have to look at different appliances and specialist techniques to actually start dealing with high rise, and part of that is manning and staffing to a safe national level", he said.
