Little-known Australian Peter Wilson has taken the outright lead midway through the first round of the Australian PGA at Coolum in Queensland.

Wilson was 7-under through 11 holes and held a one-stroke lead over New Zealand's Tim Wilkinson, who is the clubhouse leader with an opening round 66.

One of the tournament favourites, Geoff Ogilvy, was a further shot back at 5-under after he finished with a 67.

Another New Zealander, Richard Lee, also shot a 67.

Brett Rumford and John Senden had 69s while defending champion Peter Lonard and Michael Sim managed 70s.

Robert Allenby, trying to win for dying mother, was 1-under through seven holes.

American John Daly finished with a 71, overcoming a poor start in which he double-bogeyed the par-three 11th hole after finding the water.
