More than 40 drink drivers fronted court in Darwin today, with thousands of dollars in fines issued and a number of licences disqualified.

Court at times verged on the comical despite the seriousness of the charges - one man charged with drink driving said he drove because he couldn't get a taxi, and then crashed into one on his way home.

Other people blamed the Melbourne Cup, Christmas parties and just plain stupidity for getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.

Some people caught drink driving included Learners, P platers and some didn't have a licence at all.

Fines ranged from $300 to $1,000 and licence disqualifications varied from three months to 12.

In all 44 people faced court today on drink driving offences and the majority said they regretted their actions.
