Liberal MPs urge IVF bill re-write

Some Victorian Liberal MPs are urging the State Government to rewrite its contentious in vitro fertilisation (IVF) bill.

Members of the Upper House are allowed a conscience vote on the bill that would broaden access to IVF technology.

But debate is continuing on dozens of amendments, and it is unclear if a vote will occur before Parliament rises for Christmas.

Liberal MP Bernie Finn says the bill has been mishandled.

"The Government has brought to this house a piece of legislation that is a dog's breakfast," he said.

"Nobody knows what various sections mean, the Government doesn't know, and if the Government doesn't know I'm not sure how anybody else is supposed to know.

"This legislation should be, in fact in my view must be, withdrawn."
