Cairns drug 'king-pin' made $25,000 pw, court hears

Posted December 4, 2008 19:30:00

The Supreme Court in Cairns has heard details of how a 22-year-old man, described as the drug king-pin of Cairns, ran his syndicate.

Police bugged Leif Jayuna Sharkey's house and kept him under visual surveillance for more than a month in late 2006 as part of Operation Echo Nuclear.

The Supreme Court heard he was recorded organising the purchase of 10,000 ecstasy pills and saying that he had 5,500 in his possession.

Police intercepted 500 tablets bound for Mt Isa sealed in a bag of sweets.

When they raided Sharkey's home they found 1,300 ecstasy tablets, 160 grams of methylamphetamines and $114,000 in cash.

The man later admitted to making up to $25,000 profit a week.

He has pleaded guilty to 17 charges including trafficking and Justice Stanley Jones will sentence him tomorrow.
