Jetstar 'still committed' to Darwin hub

Posted December 4, 2008 20:00:00

Jetstar says the world economic downturn has not impacted on its plans to make Darwin a hub for the airline's expanding network to Asia.

Yesterday the airline launched services from Australia's east coast through Darwin to Bali, and there are already flights that stopover in Darwin on the way to Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City.

The airline says one aircraft is now stationed in Darwin, but by 2012 a fleet of seven planes should be based at the airport, leading to the creation of more than 250 jobs.

Jetstar spokesman Unni Menon says there are more Asian destinations to be announced.

"We are committed to developing a hub here in Darwin," he said.

"We have signed an agreement with the Northern Territory Government in terms of the number of aircraft that we need to have based here and we certainly are planning to fulfil that obligation."
