Thailand's King Bhumipol Adulyadej has failed to appear for a much anticipated speech on the eve of his birthday.

His daughter, Crown Princess Sirindhorn, told gathered guests at one of the palaces in Bangkok that the king was suffering a throat infection and was told by his doctors to rest.

Thais have been waiting to hear from the King this week after the end of the month-long anti-government protest which shutdown the airports and threw tourism and the broader economy into chaos.

It is unclear if King Bhumipol will make his usual birthday appearance at the Grand Palace tomorrow.

The King turns 81 tomorrow.
