Cruise ship runs aground in Antarctica, Aussies on board

Posted December 5, 2008 07:22:00

An Argentine cruise ship with more than 120 people on board, including 11 Australians, has run aground on the coast of Antarctica.

The 89 passengers and 33 crew on the Argentine-registered ship, Ciudad de Ushuaia, "are not in danger," the head of the Argentine National Antarctica Directorate, Mariano Memolli, told a television station.

He said the vessel had run aground in Wilhelmina Bay, part of a peninsula that reaches towards the southern tip of South America, but was not at risk of sinking.

The two closest nations Argentina and Chile are organising a joint rescue operation to evacuate the passengers as a precaution.

But there are other ships in the area on stand-by to help if necessary.
