Support aired for development boards merger

Posted December 5, 2008 07:27:00

The Far Western Regional Development Board says a merger of regional planning and consultative bodies will not mean job losses in local communities.

A single body will be developed to replace regional development boards and federal area consultative committees.

The board's chairman, Neville Gasmier, says the new Regional Development Australia Board will support community needs.

"It's a tremendous opportunity, we finally have two levels of government that are supportive of one direction, one focus and one group. It gives the community a great opportunity to set its own direction and get government backing, I think it's tremendous," he said.

The chairman of the Outback Area Consultative Committee, Kym Fuller, says the new board will present an excellent opportunity for the region to communicate with the federal and state governments.
