Sydney police have established a crime scene at a karaoke bar that was firebombed last night.

Chief Inspector Stuart Bell says about eight men entered the Karaoke World venue on Elizabeth Street just before 9:00pm (AEDT).

"They entered the premises, an object was thrown into one of the rooms, which police think may have been a petrol bomb, and the building was evacuated," he said.

By the time firefighters arrived, 40 patrons had already been evacuated from the bar.

Chief Inspector Bell says they will all be contacted for statements.

"Not everyone's been spoken to at this stage," he said.

"A number of statements will be taken by detectives this morning."

Police are also looking at CCTV footage to try and identify the offenders, who ran away after the attack.

The Fire Brigade says crews found the remains of three or four petrol bombs inside.

Police say it is possible that more than one petrol bomb was used.
