North Queensland chief executive Peter Parr says it is unlikely the club could afford to pay Reni Maitua if he is allowed to play in the NRL next season.

The Bulldogs lock was sacked by the Bulldogs on Tuesday after failing to explain to club bosses why he missed training the day before.

It was the latest in a list of infringements by the former Australian international.

The Cowboys have previously expressed interest in buying Maitua but Mr Parr says it is unlikely he would fit under the club's salary cap for next year.

"If we were going to bring anyone else into our squad at the moment it would be a back rower, so Reni obviously fits that mould," he said.

"Certainly we would be unable to get anywhere near the money that he's currently or was currently on at the Bulldogs."
