Vic back-burns set to increase

Posted December 5, 2008 09:16:00

Controlled burns are expected to significantly increase around Victoria after a parliamentary report recommended a three fold rise in back-burning operations.

The State Government has refused to commit to the three fold increase, but has asked the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) to develop a plan to increase the amount of land burned each year.

The DSE's Chief Fire Officer, Ewan Waller says burning the right areas is more important than increasing the volume of land torched.

"We agree that more burning has to be done but it has to be done in the right areas, right time, right place," he said.

"What we're looking at again is what will give the greatest value and the greatest need in protecting Victorians and protecting the bush."
