Orphaned koala becomes first-time mum

Posted December 5, 2008 09:49:00

An orphaned koala rescued in Queensland three years ago has started a family of her own.

Rescuers dubbed the five month old koala 'Shirley' after she was found in central Queensland in 2005.

She was taken from the property near the Blair Athol Coal Mine to a koala hospital in Brisbane.

She was released back into the wild a year later, but only after University of Queensland scientists fitted her with a radio transmitting collar, so they could track her progress.

On a recent field trip they have discovered that Shirley has now become a first-time mother - a sign that her rehabilitation is complete.
