Outback town praised for war hero statue efforts

The Australian War Memorial says it is encouraging to see an outback community working to honour a Queensland Victoria Cross (VC) winner.
A fundraising dinner is being held tonight in Blackall as part of a community project to raise $80,000 to build a commemorative statue honouring Edgar Towner.
Lieutenant Towner was awarded the VC in 1918 for his bravery during a battle in France.
The war memorial's Mal Booth says his valour was an inspiration to others and saved a critical situation.
"He was really awarded the VC for an enduring event that lasted for something like 30 hours and although he showed extreme bravery under fire - indeed when he was wounded - I think what he is known for is indicative of the Australian action on that day or on those days at Mons St Quention - they were tired and exhausted and they just kept going," he said.
