Trio tried to extort theft victim: police

Posted December 5, 2008 11:02:00

Three men have been charged over an attempted extortion in southern New South Wales last month.

Police say a 24-year-old man was at a shop in Lake Heights when he was allegedly approached by two men who threatened him with a screwdriver.

It is alleged the pair forced the man to drive to a nearby ATM and demanded he withdraw money from his account.

He was then taken back to Weringa Avenue and allowed to leave in his own car.

Police say that over the next few weeks the man received threatening phone calls telling him to pay the men money.

Officers arrested a 20-year-old man yesterday and charged him with several offences.

Later that day, police arrested two men - aged 18 and 21 - and charged them over the alleged extortion.

All three men were refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court today.
