The organisers of the Homeless World Cup in Melbourne are searching for a Kenyan player who has been missing for a week.

The soccer player, in his 20s, arrived in the city last Friday and has not been seen since.

The head of the tournament, Steven Persson, says it is possible the player might try to seek asylum.

"I guess we'd be naive not to think that it was a possibility," he said.

Mr Persson says it is not completely unexpected that an athlete would go missing.

"This is an international event and this occurs on all international events, including the Olympics, including the Commonwealth Games, including World Youth Day."

The missing Kenyan man has a valid Australian visa for another two weeks.
