Mokbel has pleaded not guilty to murder.

Not guilty plea: Tony Mokbel (ABC TV)

Former fugitive Tony Mokbel has been ordered to stand trial for the 2003 murder of hotdog vendor, Michael Marshall.

The 43-year-old Mokbel appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court via videolink, to plead not guilty to the killing.

Chief Magistrate Ian Gray said there was sufficient evidence for Mokbel to stand trial in the Victorian Supreme Court.

Michael Marshall was shot outside his South Yarra home in October 2003.

Mokbel is facing two counts of murder and drug trafficking charges and will face nine separate court proceedings, starting next month.

His lawyer Julian McMahon told the court, the schedule for Mokbel's committal hearings was almost scandalous, and he could not say if he would comply with it.

Mr McMahaon said he had to deal with massive police briefs of up to 20,000 pages.

Prosecutors accused Mr McMahon of trying to manipulate the judicial system.
