A three-year-old girl has died after being badly hurt in a car crash at Merewether, near Newcastle in the New South Wales Hunter region, yesterday.

The toddler was in the backseat of a car, which police say failed to negotiate a bend on Scenic Drive, hit a steel fence and then a tree about 2:45pm (AEST).

She was taken to John Hunter Hospital with critical injuries but later died.

A one-year-old girl, who was also in the backseat, and a 39-year-old woman believed to be the children's mother had minor injuries and were taken to hospital.

Any witnesses to the crash are urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
