Kawasaki disease genes identified

An Australian scientist has made a breakthrough in genetic research that may lead to a cure for Kawasaki disease. Professor David Burgner of UWA is the co-leader of a team which found genes that could make children more susceptible to the potentially fatal condition.

Australia refuses to play a Boxing Day cricket test in South Africa

Cricket South Africa says it would like Australia to occasionally play a Boxing Day test on African soil. Cricket Australia says playing the Boxing Day test at the MCG is a long-standing tradition that will never be broken.

Gaza hospitals struggle to cope with Israeli offensive

An Australian nurse working with the humanitarian aid organisation Medicins Sans Frontieres in Gaza City says hospitals in the Palestinian territory are struggling to cope with a constant stream of patients who've been injured in the Israeli offensive. Nurse Colin Watson says there's been no let up, even during the brief ceasefire.

Two Australians die in New Zealand ice fall

Two brothers from Melbourne have made a deadly mistake by ignoring warning signs at Fox Glazier on New Zealand's south island. Police say the pair climbed through a safety barrier to take photographs before 100 tonnes of ice and rock fell on them.

Grandmother takes on world's biggest ocean race

In the Victorian town of Lorne more than 4,000 people will take part in the biggest ocean race in the world this weekend. Lining up in the pier to pub race will be Olympians, triathletes, iron men and women and a 78 year old grandmother. The oldest woman in the event, Dorothy Dickey has only missed one race in 23 years.

Sumo: foreigners dominate Japanese tradition

For the first time in the 1500 year history of sumo wrestling four foreigners will compete in a grand tournament of the sport. The foreign presence in the competition has fired up Japanese wrestlers who are promising to stamp out the foreign domination.

Short sellers fighting back in three countries

The International Organization of Securities Commissions is finalising tough new regulations for short sellers in the wake of the global financial crisis. After temporary bans last year world regulators want more disclosure. But fund manager associations in three countries who collectively manage more than $15-trillion have come out fighting, claiming they are being unfairly punished.

Australians killed in NZ glacier tragedy

Two Melbourne brothers aged in their 20s were killed when their sight-seeing trip at New Zealand's Fox Glacier went wrong. It's believed the men were crushed by 100 tonnes of ice when an ice-shelf collapsed as the pair climbed over the viewing platform to get a closer look and take photographs.

Europe gas crisis talks collapse

Talks at the European Commission aimed at restoring the flow of Russian gas to Europe have collapsed at the last minute. Russia and Ukraine's gas companies had agreed to a deal but Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin overruled his gas executive to demand tougher conditions from Ukraine.

Bank of England cuts interest rates to record low
