The Origin of the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution

The Amercian Bill of Rights Bill of Rights are the first ten ammendments of the United States Constitution. How did they come into being and are there any lessons for us in Australia as we continue to debate the need for a national Bill of Rights here? Afterall the bonds between us are crucially important today when no countries can claim insular status, not even countries such as both of ours that were shaped in significant part by separation from established political and economic regimes.
