Coastal Waters Wind Warning
for lower eastern, southern and northern Tasmanian coastal waters.
Issued at 4:10 pm EDT on Thursday 8 January 2009

Synoptic Situation
A low to the southeast of Tasmania is moving away while a high over the Bight
extends a ridge towards the state.

Strong Wind Warning
For the Southeast Coast, lower East Coast. Wineglass Bay to South East Cape
South to southwest winds 15 to 25 knots reaching 30 knots at times over open
waters. Winds easing to 10 to 20 knots later in the evening. Seas 2 to 3 metres.
West to southwest swell 3 to 4 metres, lower inshore.

Strong Wind Warning
for northern coastal waters, including Banks Strait and Franklin Sound, Sandy
Cape to St Helens Point
West to southwest winds 15 to 25 knots, reaching 30 knots at times in open
waters, slowly easing later in the evening. Seas 2 to 3 metres in open waters.
West to southwest swell in the northwest to 3.5 metres. A westerly swell to 1.5
metres through Bass Strait tending confused east of Flinders Island.

The next warning will be issued by 11:00 pm EST

Please be aware
Wind gusts can be a further 40 percent stronger than the averages given here,
and maximum waves may be up to twice the height.

Low cloud over western and southern TAS in strong southwesterly winds is producing a few isolated showers. Cloud is patchier to the northeastern half of the state, bringing no showers.

Central North Friday: Variable winds 5/15 knots with inshore seabreezes.<p>Saturday: Northeast winds 10/20 knots about eastern parts in the morning, otherwise variable winds to 15 knots and inshore afternoon seabreezes.  Sea: Up to 1.5 m  Swell: Up to 1.0 m
Central West Friday: Mainly west to southwest winds 5/15 knots, tending southwest to southerly during the evening about northern parts.<p>Saturday: Variable winds to 10 knots tending southwest to northwest 5/15 knots in the afternoon.  Sea: Up to 1.0 m  Swell: Up to 2.0 m
Derwent Estuary Southeast winds 5/15 knots becoming variable to 10 knots overnight. Winds shifting northwesterly at 5/15 knots early tomorrow before a southeast seabreeze to 15 knots tomorrow afternoon.    
Far Northwest Friday: Southwest to southeast winds 5/15 knots.<p>Saturday: Variable winds to 15 knots, mostly southwest to southeasterly.  Sea: Up to 1.0 m  Swell: Up to 2.0 m
Hobart Waters South to southeast winds 10/15 knots, becoming variable to 10 knots later in the evening. Winds shifting north to northwest at 5/15 knots early tomorrow, becoming variable to 15 knots during the afternoon with inshore seabreezes.    
Inland Waters Friday: Northwest to southwest winds to 10 knots.<p>Saturday: Variable winds to 10 knots.    
Lower East Friday: Variable winds to 10 knots with inshore seabreezes. Winds then tending northeast to northerly at 5/15 knots in the evening.<p>Saturday: North to northwest winds 5/15 knots gradually increasing to 15/25 knots during the day and tending north to northeasterly.  Sea: Up to 2.0 m  Swell: Up to 1.5 m
Northeast Friday: North to northeast winds 5/15 knots.<p>Saturday: North to northeast winds 5/15 knots increasing to 10/20 knots in the afternoon, locally 25 knots offshore in the evening.  Sea: Up to 2.0 m  Swell: Up to 1.0 m
Southeast Friday: Variable winds to 15 knots with inshore seabreezes.<p>Saturday: North to northwest winds 5/15 knots, locally 20 knots east of Tasman Island, increasing to 15/25 knots east of Tasman Island during the day. Winds elsewhere becoming variable to 15 knots with inshore afternoon seabreezes.  Sea: Up to 2.0 m  Swell: Up to 2.5 m
Southwest Friday: Mainly west to northwest winds 5/15 knots, 20 knots at times about southern parts.<p>Saturday: Northwest to westerly winds 5/15 knots.  Sea: Up to 1.5 m  Swell: Up to 2.5 m
Upper East Friday: North to northeast winds 5/15 knots.<p>Saturday: Northerly winds 5/15 knots gradually increasing to become 15/25 knots in the evening.  Sea: Up to 2.0 m  Swell: Up to 1.0 m
