On parole from prison Tom Joad returns home to find his family’s Oklahoma farm desolate. Banks are forcing croppers from their properties in droves, and machines reap the last of the cotton before the land and the profits dry up - permanently. The hungry head toward California, but the promises of work, full stomachs, and a new life also turn to dust as the system of oppression stalks the dispossessed across the desert. The Joads, and those they encounter on the road, are changed as they grapple with a twisted system but find that whilst those in comfort refuse even the most basic rights, those in tribulation share, even from their very own bodies.
